Tip 23 — Exploit the blind spot during transition

When your opponents transition from the baseline to the non-volley zone, their focus narrows downward to track the ball at their feet. They are blind to the player moving laterally across the opposite court. Instead of driving straight ahead into their paddle path, direct your next ball wide toward the sideline they are vacating. This lateral shift forces a desperate reaching volley while they are off balance, often resulting in a pop-up.

Geometry dictates that a moving player cannot cover both the central drive and the sharp cross-court angle simultaneously. By identifying the moment their momentum carries them forward rather than sideways, you reveal a vacant rectangle of space. Hitting into this window requires less power and more precision, relying entirely on court geography rather than raw speed to win the point.

Integrate this read into your standard third shot strategy by scanning the opponent's feet before you strike. If both players are moving forward in tandem, the middle is protected but the flanks are vulnerable. Decouple your shot selection from your power output and let their forward momentum work against them.
