Tip 21 — Target the trailing foot to freeze rotation

When opponents attack from the transition zone, their momentum naturally carries them forward on their dominant side. To disrupt this forward trajectory, direct your counter-punch squarely at their trailing foot. This forces an awkward weight shift and prevents them from completing their natural rotation, effectively neutralizing the power of their drive.

Most players practice receiving balls at chest height and anticipate lateral movement, but few train for a shot aimed directly below their hip line on the back foot. By keeping your drive low and locked onto that specific anchor point, you rob them of the leverage needed to generate a clean counter.

Observe your opponent's stance as they split step. If their weight is heavily committed to the front foot, the trailing foot is light and unreactive. Hitting into that vulnerability creates an immediate jam, forcing a defensive pop-up on their next exchange.
